I had a wonderful experience with Grails after finishing two projects. If you are a new Java programmer who's looking for a good web frameworks, Grails will be your savior just like what it was to me.
Here's what I like about Grails
- Relatively easy to learn compared to other Java web frameworks.
- Provides the basic things that one need, it's all there and there's not much
to configure (ex. No XML). - It's agile!
- Good ORM built on top of Hibernate.
- Grails was developed mostly in Java so it's enterprise-ready and it scales well.
- Uses groovy. Easy to learn Java scripting language
- Although it's not really Java, it does take advantage of the massive amount of Java libraries available, including ones I use like the Java Excel API and JFreeChart.
- I like database stored procedure programming, and calling stored procedurefrom Grails is easy as well as executing complex sql queries.
- Integrate my choice of Javascript framework easily. I use jQuery.
- Grails helps me code properly because of its MVC pattern and servicesconcept.
- Grails plug-in are so cool like Quartz and Searchable
One of the requirements of my next project is that it be hosted on the internet. My client doesn't care what technology I use but wants the hosting fee to be as low as possible. And as we all know, Java web hosting is not cheap compared to others.
I hope to use a non-Java web framework, Django or Ruby on Rails, that I could be comfortable with because of the knowledge and experience I have with Grails. I'd like to see the things that I like in Grails on them. Right now, I'm gearing towards Django because I know a little of Python.

Check out rimuhosting.com before you decide that hosting for Java is too expensive. [no connection other than being a satisified customer bla bla bla]
I would avoid shared hosting altogether for a django or rails app and go with a virtual machine (or dedicated server). There are quite a number around nowadays and you might even find one that's cheap enough for you to continue using grails.
Go with Rails. Grails is adapted from Rails, and Groovy is much closer conceptually to Ruby than Python.

Learning a framework takes longer than learning either Python or Ruby, both of which are easy to pick up. So I'd say choose the framework closest to what you are used to. In this case, it would be Rails.
Learning a framework will take longer than learning either Python's or Ruby's syntax. There's far more about both to learn, however, and learning a framework will typically *guide* your learning of its underlying language -- meaning you'll be learning both at the same time, even if you come in already knowing a little of the language. At least that's how it worked for me with Ruby.
does Grails support JQuery?
i am currently testing grails on slicehost, a virtual hosting shop. $20/month for the smallest slice, good for testing. $40-$60 for a production ready, small site.
another option is amazon EC2, but it's about $70/month for full time use. the biggest advantage is that you pay by the hour, so spinning up new servers is always based on demand.
I'm also considering using JQuery for my latest grails project. Did you have any troubles with it?

I got no problem with grails and jquery. Technically there's no such as compatibility problem when it comes to web framework and javascript library. btw jQuery rocks!
